Authentic Hummus Recipe with a Little Tahini

This authentic hummus recipe is so easy and tasty, you’ll never want to eat store-bought hummus again (sorry not sorry). My Teta (grandmother in Arabic) used to make hummus all the time, so I learned from the best. She’d usually serve hummus with pita bread and some other sides, like her homemade cheese (I’m going to have to figure out how to make that), falafel and of course, tea. It’s also great as a party appetizer.

Hummus is very flexible. You start with chickpeas, tahini, garlic and olive oil as a base, but you can pretty much add whatever you like. Some people like their hummus with a lot of tahini. I find that store-bought hummus tastes like it has a lot in it, but I prefer it with just a little bit. Tahini has a peanut-butter-esque texture, and I just like the texture to be lighter. You can always add more if you like.

You will need:

  • Chickpeas – 1 Can
  • Tahini – 1 Tbsp
  • Lemon – 1 (juiced)
  • Garlic – 1 clove or 1 Tbsp Garlic powder
  • Olive Oil – 1 Tbsp + more for garnish
  • Cumin – 1 Tbsp
  • Salt – 1 tsp
  • Black pepper – 1/2 tsp

Authentic Hummus Recipe Instructions

  1. Pour chickpeas into a small saucepan. Save 1/2 of the liquid from the can. Bring to a boil. Then, reduce heat and let simmer for a few minutes.
  2. If you have time, let the chickpeas cool and then peel them. This will help your hummus be creamier, but you can skip this step if you like.
  3. Pour the chickpeas and 1/2 of the juice from the can into a food processor. I like to save a few whole chickpeas for garnish. (My Teta always did this). You could use a blender if you don’t have a food processor.
  4. Add the tahini – It’s kind of like natural peanut butter – you’ve got to stir it pretty well.
  5. Add the olive oil, garlic, cumin, tahini, lemon, cumin, salt, and pepper.
  6. Blend until creamy.
  7. Taste and add more tahini if you’d like!
  8. Scrape into a shallow dish. Garnish with a few whole chickpeas. Drizzle olive oil and extra cumin on top.

That’s it!

Serve it with pita, cucumber, vegetables, pretzel crisps, or whatever you like.
