DIY – Building a fire

I’ve seen too many people struggle out there building a fire. So therein lies the inspiration for this post. Take a few minutes to read this, and your inner caveman (or cavewoman) will be released.

Disclaimer: The following information assumes you have dry wood and and some sort of flame ignition readily available(match, clicker, flamethrower, etc.) . What this information is not is how to build a fire in the woods assuming you’re in Antarctica and it’s raining. This is for those making a back yard fire, and realizing the struggle to build a fire is real. We’re here to help.

What you’ll need:

  • Newspaper, napkins, paper towels, anything paper
  • Matches or a lighter like this on Amazon
  • Dry Wood

Step 1: put twigs in a cross cross pattern to allow air to get below your fire, to start

Step 2: make balls of the paper product and stack them. Roughly 8-12″ in diameter, and 6″ in height should be fine.

Step 3: take the smallest twigs you have and make a conical shape, essentially a mini tepee. As you work outward around the tepee, use larger sticks, followed by the wood. Be sure to allow for spaces near the base to get fresh oxygen to fuel your fire.

Step 4: light that bad boy on a few paper edges, and grab your smore material!!

Bonus: once lit, you can line the edges of your fire with a few more pieces of wood to dry them out. As your main fire gets lower, push them toward the center. Once your fire is established, the best technique I’ve found is to stack logs like a Jenga stack, except with gaps to allow for air penetration.
