12 Days of Christmas: Thomas Jefferson’s Drinking Chocolate

Historical references tell us Thomas Jefferson enjoyed a cup of drinking chocolate in the evening. If you’re like TJ and love your drinking chocolate, then this recipe is for you!

“The superiority of chocolate, both for health and nourishment, will soon give it the same preference over tea and coffee in America which it has in Spain.” Thomas Jefferson in a letter to John Adams 1785.

Ingredients:

  • 3 oz chocolate – 72% dark or darker
  • 2.4 oz sugar
  • 1.75 oz milk chocolate
  • 1 oz cocoa
  • 32 oz milk

1 ounce is equal to 2 Tablespoons.

Directions: warm milk, add ingredients and stir. Warm to 160 degrees and serve immediately.

If you serve this at a party, consider setting it up as a station for your guests to serve themselves. I used my Mikasa Parchment china and added a couple other desserts. Keep in mind, a little chocolate goes a long way.

Enjoy!
