Growing up, I was in love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All day every day, I was 100% Ninja Turtles. My grandma would indulge my desires to be a Ninja Turtle by making me a safe toy “staff,” the weapon of choice for the great thinker, Donatello. For you nubes out there, he was the purple Ninja Turtle. So go grab some newspaper and some kids and lets have fun!

Materials: Newspaper and scotch tape
Take a sheet of newspaper, open it and lay it flat on the table. Start at any corner and roll the newspaper into a cylinder, as tightly as you can. If you are struggling to start the roll, you can put a straw down and start wrapping the newspaper around the straw. Continue to roll the newspaper from one corner to the opposite corner on the diagonal. Try to keep the wrapping as tightly as possible. When complete, tape the end of the corner over the newly wrapped “staff.” Make several of these staff’s as they will bend easily and quickly, so make sure you have adequate back-ups. It works best using the glossy inserts from the newspaper.
